Jewellery Soldering FAQs
How can Studio Jewellers help me join my broken jewellery pieces back together?
At Studio Jewellers, our expert jewellers have two different techniques available to seamlessly join your jewellery back together: Traditional Soldering and Laser Soldering (Welding).
What is Jewellery Soldering?
Jewellery soldering is a repair technique used to mend fragmented pieces of jewellery together. The technique involves the use of a soldering torch as well as solder to fuse metal components together, ensuring a strong and seamless connection.
One of the key aspects of successful jewellery soldering is selecting the appropriate solder material. Solder comes in various alloys and compositions, each with its own melting point and properties. Choosing the right solder for a specific jewellery piece is essential to ensure that the solder flows evenly and creates a strong bond without compromising the integrity of the metals being joined.
What is Laser Soldering?
Laser soldering is a modern technique used to join two pieces of metal together. Unlike traditional soldering which uses a heated tool or torch, laser soldering employs a focused laser beam to generate the required heat for the soldering process. The main advantage of this method is its precision and control.
In the realm of jewellery repair, this technique is especially beneficial. Since the beam of the laser is so fine and accurate, it can be used to make precise welds in very precise measures. This is advantageous in instances where the break to be soldered is in a delicate area that’s hard to reach, or in an area where large torches of heat from traditional solders may prove dangerous to the piece as a whole – for instance, in areas that are close to gemstones or pearls.
In either case of traditional or laser soldering, our team will walk you through your particular soldering project and make suggestions on what we think the best technique would be for the situation.
What kinds of pieces can be soldered?
Broken pieces of rings, earrings, chains, necklaces, and virtually all other types of jewellery can be soldered back together again. Of course, this does depend on the situation and the state and composition of the fragmented pieces. Such an example is titanium – due to its physical properties, titanium jewellery is incredibly difficult to solder.
If you’re unsure about the possibility of soldering your broken jewellery back together, feel free to get in touch or visit us at our studio for a complimentary consultation.
Will soldering a broken piece of jewellery together leave marks?
Whether or not a mark is left on the solder joint really depends on the piece at hand. In some cases, there will be minimal signs of repair at the soldering joints, in other cases, there may be nothing noticeable to be seen.
For all soldering projects, we use a solder alloy that best matches the alloy of the pieces to be mended together to ensure the best finish.
Prior to soldering your broken jewellery piece back together, our team will walk you through the expectations and the process of repairing your piece.
How long does it take to solder a broken piece of jewellery back together?
All solder projects are done on site at our local studio in Calgary. This means that most jewellery repairs can be completed within a few days, if not sooner.
